After Beauvoir’s death, Sartre’s adopted daughter and literary heir Arlette Elkaïm would not let many of Sartre’s letters be published in unedited form. Most of Sartre’s letters available today have Beauvoir’s edits, which include a few omissions but mostly the use of pseudonyms. After Sartre died in 1980, Beauvoir published his letters to her with edits to spare the feelings of people in their circle who were still living. After Beauvoir's death, Sartre's adopted daughter and literary heir Arlette Elkaïm would not let many of Sartre's letters be published in unedited form. Ever since Sartre died, Gallimard has split Sartre’s royalties with Arlette Elkaïm.
After the death of Sartre in 1980, Beauvoir published his letters to her (Lettres au Castor, 1983) as well as a very cold book of memoirs 'Adieux: A Farewell to Sartre', written from 1981-1985. Ten years ago, Le Bon de Beauvoir went head to head with Arlette Elkaïm-Sartre, his adopted daughter—and also, briefly, his lover—over a book about the two French writers. In 2005, Arlette Elkaïm-Sartre, who was Sartre’s adopted daughter, demanded that major cuts be made to a book about the couple’s complex, sometimes torrid relationship. Ever since Sartre died, Gallimard has split Sartre’s royalties with Arlette Elkaïm. Not surprisingly, Gallimard told me they would first need to make sure the book would not offend the literary executors — Arlette Elkaïm Sartre nor Sylvie Le Bon de Beauvoir.
